It all started on a slow night in September of 2003 at Backstage Cafe'Ky in Elizabethtown KY. Recording Artist/Songwriter Gary Fights was hosting the open mic when Singer/Songwriter Kim Swickard walked in for the first time with her husband Mark. After a little coaxing, Kim took the stage and performed a couple of her original songs, and everybody was blown away, especially Fights. After she finished the two began talking about the posibility of working together. They began practicing together and at the same time recording their debut EP. Over the next couple of months they performed at open mics in area venues developing their style and music. On December 6, 2003 they had their first official show at Backstage Cafe' 'releasing their debut EP '2 X 12' for a sold out crowd and 2 X 12 was born.
Over the next few months Kim and Gary continued performing as the duo 2 x 12, and working on other projects, Gary continued doing some of his solo projects and Kim working as the background vocalist for Underground Angel, but as 2 X 12 was where they found themselves in the most demand. In March of 2004 they uploaded the songs 'Over The Edge' and 'J.D.Black Lable Blues' on Soundclick.com. The later of which quickly climbed the Straight Ahead Blues Chart to number 6 where it stayed for six straight weeks. They also uploaded three live songs from a concert they performed at the State Theater in Elizabethtown. Through the spring they began recording their first full-length album. The working title of the project was 'Old, New, and Borrowed Too'. The album was to be a collection of new songs written by both Gary and Kim, remakes of songs from Gary's 'Over The Edge' Album, and a few songs written by other area songwriters. As the project neared completion they decided to change the name to 'We'll Play That Bridge When We Come To It' and they added a re-recorded version of Kim's song 'Eddy' to it. On July 31, 2004 they released the new album at a standing room only concert at Backstage Cafe'. The continued to perform shows in the area in support of the album, and also began working with retired veteran bassist Sonny Waddell. Waddell began sitting in on some of their shows in the latter half of 2004. It was at that time that Gary and Kim decided it was time to consider expanding their duo into a full band. While they were performing a series of sold out shows in the last few months of 2004 they were also looking for a drummer to fill out the band. In November they found drummer/percussionist Brenda Dockins. Her first and only stage performance with 2x12 would be a New Year's Party at Backstage.
As 2005 began, the band 2x12 continued working together to make the band sound tighter, however, things just weren't really working out with their drummer... She left the band in February, and they began looking for her replacement. They didn't have to search very long because a friend of Kim's husband Mark by the name of Bob Oberg was moving into the area from Ohio at that time... He began sitting in with Kim, Gary, and Sonny, and found he fit right in. While Bob was starting knock the rust off and provide the beat the band needed for their blues/rock music. Kim and Gary still accepted some bookings as an Acoustic Duo. Most notible was being the opening act at the Tsunami Benefit held at the State Theater in February. They also began performing every Sunday at Phat Zoe's and began building a small but loyal following. In April they stopped performing at Phat Zoe's due to differences with their management, and started performing at WinkerB's sports grill and bar every Wednesday instead. Many of their fans from Phat Zoe's followed them to their new home. Audiences loved their mix of Blues and Classic rock as well as their original material. Kim's soulful vocals and Gary's hard edged rock vocals complemented each other perfectly, and veteran bassist Sonny Waddell was a hit with the crowds. Bob kept it all together with his rock solid performances on the drums. Interest in the band was starting to build until the ran into their first major setback.. On May 29 just three days after performing a show at WinkerB's Gary Fights suffered a heart attack.
Things looked shaky for 2x12 in June because they had to cancel a number of gigs because of Gary's health problems, then he had a set-back which put him back in the hospital in early July. However, a couple of weeks later they got it all together and performed a come-back show at Backstage Cafe' in late July. From there they just kept on playing. They once again started playing every week at WinkerB's and started planning their demo so they could try to expand into other markets. During this time they were checking out other area bands and decided they needed a little something extra... In the latter half of 2005 they began searching for a second lead guitarist. They found one in Mike Cable. He contacted Gary after reading online that 2x12 was looking for a lead guitar player. He asked if he could audition and blew the band away. He was hired on the spot... at the same time Gary and Kim began talking to singer Karen Jaggers (Gary's sister) about sitting in on background vocals. Her natural soprano brought the high end which helped create the vocal 'wall of sound' the band is known for. Unfortunately Mike's military obligations took him away from the band as 2005 drew to a close, but they continued performing as a five piece band without missing a step. With the new year, 2x12 has renewed sense of energy and are currently working on their new album which is scheduled for a summer 2006 release. In March Minnesota native Blues guitarist Johnny Edblom began setting in with the band, now they are becoming one of the hottest Blues/Rock acts in the area and they are looking to expand into other markets.
